Conceal the Screen: How to Hide your TV

In the modern home, the TV often occupies a prime spot in the living room or bedroom, dominating the space with its large black screen. As our homes become more of a sanctuary for relaxation and creativity, I advocate for hiding or minimising the presence of the TV in your spaces which will help create aesthetic flow and harmony.

TV Cabinets or Consoles: Use a TV cabinet or console that allows you to conceal the TV when not in use. These often have doors that slide or fold away, keeping the TV hidden behind them.

Artwork or Screens: Incorporate artwork or decorative screens that can be placed in front of the TV. These can either slide away or be on hinges so that they can easily move when you want to watch TV.

Custom Cabinetry: Design custom cabinetry that includes a dedicated space for the TV. You can have doors that open and close or even panels that slide to reveal the TV.

Behind Sliding Panels: Install sliding panels on a track that can move to reveal or hide the TV. This can be a modern and sleek way to integrate the TV into your design.

Built-in Shelving: Incorporate the TV into built-in shelving units where it can be hidden among books, decorative items or other objects.

Mirror / Art TV: Invest in a mirror TV, where the TV screen is integrated into a mirror. When the TV is off, it appears as a regular mirror, blending seamlessly into the decor.

Invisible TV: Some advanced technologies allow TVs to be hidden behind special materials like mirrors or artwork that become transparent when the TV is turned on.

Room Dividers: Use a room divider that can rotate or slide to reveal the TV on one side and conceal it on the other

Projectors: Projectors are a fun cinematic way to not have a TV at all. Project onto a plain painted wall or onto a screen that is easily taken down and packed away.

Each of these methods offers a different aesthetic and functional solution for hiding your TV within your interior design, allowing you to maintain the look and feel of your space without compromising on entertainment options.

Here's how we hid our own TV in our snug

BLANK CANVAS

A beautiful fireplace but with the recess having previously been taken up on either side by a cupboards, the current wall felt flat and uninspiring.

We started by creating a new mantle and pillars to create a deeper fire surround which could accommodate books on either side, and enough space for a TV to be hidden in the centre.

We used MDF to create these picture frames that would be hung on piano hinges to create a concertina close.

The alcoves are starting to look like they're always been there. Adding the natural depth that would have surrounded the fireplace. Ovolo beading adds an extra layers of interest and design to the surround.

We finished by painting a dusty pink colour which is colour washed around the entire room to seamlessly blend with the wall panelling.
